The sources were commenting on Karnataka Assembly Speaker K G Bopaiah disqualifying 16 rebel MLAs ahead of the trust vote. The BJP government in Karnataka survived its hard challenge today as Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa won a trust vote in the Assembly after the Speaker disqualified 16 rebel MLAs. Karnataka Speaker K G Bopaiah disqualified 11 BJP and five Independent MLAs from the Karnataka Assembly under anti-defection Act in response toYeddyurappa’s petition. The JDS president HD Kumaraswami termed the trust vote unconstitutional and said he, along with 118 MLAs, are going to approcah the Governor.

The rebel MLAs had withdrawn support to the government on October 6, 2010. The BJP MLAs who have been disqualified include Balachandra Jarkiholi, Belur Gopala Krishna, Anand Asnotikar, Dr Sarvabowma Bagali, V Nagaraju, Raje Kage, Y Sampangi, Nanjundaswamy, S K Bellubbi, H S Shankara Lingegowda and Shivanagouda Naik.

Former ministers Venkataramanappa, Shivaraj Tangadagi, Goolihatti Sekhar and M P Narendraswamy and independent MLAs have also been disqualified. With this action, Bopaiah has brought down the strength in the 224-member Assembly to 208. The ruling party strength has been reduces to 106 from 117 and the opposition Congress and JDS have a combined strength of 101 (Congress 73 and JDS 28).
